This building in downtown Atlanta was for many decades the headquarters of the Atlanta Journal and Constitution Newspapers. In 2010 the newspaper donated the building to the City who plans to locate some of its departments there.
Phase one of the work includes removing the printing press equipment from the building. The press room is the size of a football field and contains 2 levels of equipment. Removing the equipment presents a challenge due to the difficulty of dismantling it and a lack of any opening large enough to remove the machines. Apparently the building was constructed around the press operation.
The recycling contractor hired David Butler & Associates to design a rampway and temporary opening in order to extract the equipment. The work included analysis of existing structure, removal of beam work, temporary security doors and replacement of the beam and exterior wall.
